The problem began on South Cumberland Drive around 11:30 Tuesday morning when rocks began to give way leading to a landslide and later causing the road to cave in.
The landslide may also be to blame for the portion of the road caving in and causing part of it to fall out.
Dozens of trees were uprooted and blocked part of the road and part of the pavement is raised and has broken into several pieces.
Cumberland Gap City Hall was contacted immediately and about the issue and Mayor John Douglas immediately sent crews to close the entrance of South Cumberland Drive and the intersection at Tiprell Road.
Engineers were contacted to determine what obstacles they are going to face when it comes to repairing the portion of the road but until then, the road will remain closed.
Both the cause of the landslide and the cause of the road caving in are undetermined but officials say that a private construction company that has been clearing property adjacent to the roadway possibly caused the landslide.
More information will be made available as it is released from officials.
