LMU School of Business offering free tax preparation
by Special to the Claiborne Progress

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) School of Business is once again offering free tax preparation services through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Five School of Business students will be preparing taxes under the supervision and guidance of Assistant Professor of Business Roger Holt, a retired IRS employee, three days a week through the federal tax deadline of April 15. Holt and his students have been trained on the IRS tax software and are certified to e-file returns.

The services are available for very basic returns including state income tax reporting. VITA has set up a temporary office in the first floor of the Duke Hall of Citizenship (enter at the rear side entrance). Services are available on Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m.; Wednesdays 1-3 p.m.; and Fridays 1-4 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We can handle itemized returns and the state tax forms,” Holt said. “What the students are not quite ready for are situations of self-employment, stock sales or bonds.”

VITA clients should bring necessary tax information including W-2s, 1099s, 1098s and SSA cards for yourself and dependents. Additionally, having a previous year’s tax return on hand will speed the process along. For more information contact Holt at 423.869.6699.

Lincoln Memorial University is a values-based learning community dedicated to providing educational experiences in the liberal arts and professional studies. The main campus is located in Harrogate, Tennessee. For more information about the undergraduate and graduate programs available at LMU, contact the Office of Admissions at 423-869-6280 or e-mail at admissions@lmunet.edu.
