For the third time in as many years, Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) served as host of the Claiborne County Relay for Life Kickoff.
The event is primarily used as a means of raising money for cancer research, accomplished by many businesses donating time and hard work.
This year’s kickoff included teams from Amedisys of Tazewell, Blair’s Creek Baptist Church, Springdale School, Citizens Bank, Ellen Meyers School, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, Giles Industries, Indian Creek Youth Group, Jaymin’s Friends for a Cure, Midway School, Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Poppy’s Pickers, Riverside Rentals, Shawanee Order of the Eastern Star, Suncrest Home Health, Walmart of New Tazewell and Walters State Community College.
LMU Athletic Director Roger Vannoy and the LMU athletic program have been supporters of the relay kickoff since they first became involved. They have given some athletic funding for the cause as well.
“The kickoff has been a good activity for us. After the kickoff raised $ 7,500 the very first year it became a no-brainer. I’m not saying this for press reasons but we also give half the gate to the cause. Its a great program for all involved,” said Vannoy.
The kickoff begins a period of raising funds for the American Cancer Society and ends Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Harrogate City Park during a six-hour relay for teams consisting of 10 to 15 people.
Also on this date, survivors and caregivers will be recognized. There will be a Luminary Celebration plus a Fight Back Ceremony.
