Wreck halts traffic through one side of tunnel

A two-vehicle wreck had traffic at a standstill at the Cumberland Gap Tunnel for some time Friday evening. The wreck occurred around 8 p.m. in the southbound lane of traffic on U.S. Hwy. 25E, right outside the tunnel near the Virginia on-ramp. According to witnesses at the scene, a gold Chevrolet sedan and a burgundy SUV collided when one attempted to cross the median from the northbound lane into the southbound lane. The SUV overturned on the bank next to the road. There were two people in the SUV, according to officials. One was transported to a medical facility and one was transported via Lifestar to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. The driver of the Chevrolet was also transported to a medical facility. The Cumberland Gap Tunnel Authority, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Service and Cumberland Gap Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. The Claiborne Progress will have more information as it becomes available. (Marisa Anders | Claiborne Progress)
