HARROGATE — The inaugural Duck Race sponsored by Wal-Mart to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life was a success, as several people gathered at the Powell River on Saturday to watch and cheer as over 150 rubber ducks floated to the finish line.
This year’s race was a fundraiser that employees of Wal-Mart in New Tazewell came up with to raise money in a unique way, according to Tina Poore, one of the organizers of the event. The Relay for Life team sold the ducks for $5 each, and there were some great prizes available for the winners — including a Rock Band video game package, a $100 savings bond, and numerous gift cards. For those present at the event, door prizes were available as well.
The lucky duck this year was purchased by David Carroll, who won the Rock Band video game package. Other winners included: 2nd place, Rebecca Brae Miller; 3rd place, Robin Mize; 4th place, Melinda Green and 5th place, Corey H. (no last name was on the entry).
Poore said the Wal-Mart team is excited about the response this year and definitely looks forward to a bigger and better Duck Race next year.
