NEW TAZEWELL — It’s almost time once again for the annual Christmas parade, and plans are well underway.

The New Tazewell Merchants Association met at New Tazewell City Hall on Friday, Sept. 26, to discuss the upcoming annual event. “The Joy of Christmas” is the theme for this year’s parade.

Fred England will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal. Honored Merchants featured in the parade will be George and Elaine Debusk of Debusk Jewelers and Sandy Wilder of Shear Design.

The parade will be Sat., Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. The route for the parade will be the same as in years past, beginning at the Ingles parking lot and going north on U.S. Hwy. 33 to redlight #4.

“It gets bigger every year,” said Polly Enix, president of the association, adding that volunteers are needed to help with crowd control along the parade route.

Fees for parade entries have increased this year to $25 per entry, including horses, cars and motorcycles. Pageant winners only are allowed to enter the parade this year, and the $25 fee applies to them as well.

The annual Burley Queen Beauty Pageant will precede the parade once again, and will be held at the old high school on Sat., Nov. 15. Mandalyn Noe is in charge of the pageant.

All parade entries are required to register by Nov. 14 at either First Century Bank in New Tazewell or Enix Jewelers. Floats need to be at the parade staging area in the parking lot by 11:30 a.m. on the day of the parade.

Present at the meeting were: Polly Enix, Tammy Myers, Hershel Beeler, Dennis Shipley, Wayne Mewhinney, Johnny Johnson and Roger Hager. The next meeting will be Fri., Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. at New Tazewell City Hall.
