Halloween festivities

CUMBERLAND GAP—During the November Cumberland Gap Board of Mayor meeting the BMA said a special “Thank you” to everyone who participated in the town’s Halloween festivities this year. The board thanked those in the town who helped with decorations and those who donated candy and food for the fire department to hand out. They thanked all the high school students who carved pumpkins for the Halloween Lights event and those who donated money for the winning students’ prizes.

Alderman John Ravnum said this year’s turnout was bigger than ever and he was very pleased with the outcome. He then reported that next month on December 6, 2008, Father and Mother Christmas would once again be coming to Cumberland Gap.

He said Father and Mother Christmas would be staying at his home while he and his wife Geri were “called out of town”. Father Christmas will be reading the story of Christmas and telling of the legend of Santa Clause to those who come to visit.

This is an annual event in Cumberland Gap and Ravnum invites everyone to come see Father and Mother Christmas on December 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at his home. There will be refreshments of hot cider and cookies.

In old business the board discussed the issues with the walking trail project that were brought up at last month’s meeting. Gary McGill of McGill Associates was present at the October meeting to discuss some concerns the board had with paying some bills from McGill Associates. The board was concerned they had double payed for work done to a section of the walking trail. They asked McGill several questions regarding the work done to the trail and McGill responded saying he would have to review the files and return in November.

McGill returned for the November 3 meeting and presented a letter to the board answering their questions. He clarified the situations with the work done on the trail and noted the town did not double pay for the work that was done. Mayor John Douglas said he agrees with McGill and feels the board should pay for the bills. They voted unanimously to pay McGill Associates.

Also during the meeting the board approved a resolution to amend the town’s growth plan to include expanding into Tipprell. Alderwoman Joan Webb voice some concerns asking if the Tipprell community had been contacted to see “what they wanted.” She was the only board member to vote no to the resolution because of her concerns.

Kathy Maxwell, a Cumberland Gap resident, contacted the town saying damage had been done to her property and she felt the city should repair it. The issue was brought before the board and Mayor Douglas said the property had been visited and it was observed that damage had been done. The board voted to do what needs to be done to fix the damage.

Just before the meeting adjourned City Recorder Linda Moyers made the announcement that surveys must be completed by town residents as a part of a Grant application for a waterline project. She said for residents to expect someone knocking on their door with a survey to be filled out. The meeting was then adjourned.
