Christmas (Burley) Beauty Pageant

Information on Medicare Enrollment

Kim Ward with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program and Medicare Information and Assistance Program from the East TN Human Resource Agency, will be speaking at the Harrogate Senior Citizens Center on Thurs., Nov. 13, at 10:30 a.m. She will be speaking on Medicare Enrollment Updates. Blood drive scheduled

Medic Regional Blood Center has the following local blood drive coming up:
  • Wed., Nov. 12, Lincoln Memorial University, 6965 Cumberland Gap Parkway, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. inside Osteopathic Medicine Building.

    Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more, and have positive identification. Donors will receive a free t-shirt, cholesterol evaluation and credit towards Medic’s Family Blood Coverage program. This program exempts donors and their IRS dependents from paying blood collection and processing fees at any U.S. hospital if a transfusion is needed. Medic, a non-profit organization, is the only blood provider for the greater East Tennessee area and depends on volunteer donors to help supply the area’s need.

    Annual Christmas Parade

    This year’s Christmas parade is scheduled for Sat., Nov. 22, and will begin at 1 p.m. at the Ingles parking lot. The theme for this year is “The Joy of Christmas.” Grand Marshal will be Fred England. Honored Merchants will be George and Elaine Debusk of Debusk Jewelers and Sandy Wilder of Shear Design. Two divisions for floats in the Christmas Parade: Commercial and religion. Cash prizes for first, second, and third place of $300, $200, and $100 in each division. There will be eleven places for antique cars with one being Best of Parade. Antique tractors and horse and wagons in the parade will have a chance to win first and second place trophies.

    The Motorcycle Memorial Motorcade will be in front of the parade.

    For those riding horses in the parade, a Best Dressed Rider and Horse will be chosen. There will be three Best Dressed categories, Man, Lady and Child (15 and under).

    All parade entries are required to pre-register by Nov. 14 at either First Century Bank in New Tazewell or Enix Jewelers. Floats need to be at the parade staging area in the parking lot by 11:30 a.m. on the day of the parade.

    Parade entry fee is $25 per entry, including horses, cars and motorcycles. Pageant winners only are allowed to enter the parade this year, and the $25 fee applies to them as well. The Memorial Motorcade of motorcycles will follow the parade. For more information about the parade contact Polly Enix at 626-4268.

    Driver license roadblocks

    Roadblocks during the week of 11/09 thru 11/15 on TN 63/Bristol Road in Claiborne County. Roadblocks during the week of 11/16 thru 11/22 on TN 33 in Hancock County.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, Troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found these driver license roadblocks to be an effective means of enforcing driver license laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

    Hypnotist to bring outrageous show to Middlesboro

    Hancock Co. commodity distribution

    The Upper East Tennessee Human Development Agency will begin a Commodity Distribution Nov. 19, 2008 at Hancock Recreational Department on Harrison Street (old high school) in Sneedville. If you have questions you may call the Sneedville Neighborhood Service Center at 733-2522 or contact the staff at Main Street prior to Nov. 19. Items will be distributed on a first come first served basis to income eligible households until all commodities are gone. All recipients must be a resident of Tennessee. This project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.

    Each recipient must now have a commodity ID card in order to pick up their commodities. An ID card is obtained by completing an application at the Neighborhood Service Center. If someone is picking up your commodities, they must have your ID card with their name on the card authorizing them to do so. Staff will be available during the distribution to help you obtain an ID card if you have not already done so. Limits to pickup are five (5) orders.

    The distribution will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m. or earlier, if foodstuff is no longer available. Please bring a paper bag or box to put your commodities in at the site. Also, volunteers may be available to help the elderly and handicapped carry their commodities.

    Misrepresentation of need, or sale or exchange of USDA commodities is prohibited and could result in a fine, imprisonment, or both. USDA’s Emergency Food Assistance Program is available to all eligible recipients regardless of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap.

    Handgun training

    Tennessee handgun permit training class will be held in the training room of the Claiborne County Justice Center in Tazewell, on Saturday, November 15, 2008 beginning at 9 a.m. Rain or Shine. Participants need to bring a safe handgun, 50 rounds of factory ammunition, ear and eye protection. Successful completion will allow you to carry a handgun in Tennessee and several other states.

    TNT Youth Basketball Signups

    Sign-ups for TNT Youth Basketball will be on Thursday night Nov. 6, 13, 20, and Tuesday night Nov. 25 at McDonalds from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Teams will be formed for boys and girls age 5 to 15. The registration fee will be $35.00 per player.

    Neighborhood Watch

    Big Sycamore/Howard’s Quarter neighborhood watch will be meeting November 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Howard’s Quarter fire hall. all community members are invited to attend.

    Cancer Support Group Postponed

    Soup Bean Supper

    Soup Bean Supper at Tazewell Senior Citizens Friday, November 14, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Given by Dogwood Club. Soup beans, cole slaw, corn bread, onions, dessert and drink. Take outs available. $5.00.

    East Tennessee Human Resource Agency

    (ETHRA) funded in part by the TN Dept. of Agriculture, is accepting applications for the USDA Commodity Food Program. ETHRA is located at 1720 Church Street, Tazewell. Staff will be available from 1 p.. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday. If you plan on coming during the morning hours, please call before coming as the staff is sometimes out of the office on other job assignments. ETHRA staff will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. except for November 11, 2008, and November 19, 2008 for Staff training. For more information, please call 626-8187.

    It’s Chili Time in Claiborne County

    The annual Claiborne County Volunteer Rescue Squad Chili Dinner will be held November 15, 2008, 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. at the Claiborne County Rescue Squad Building located next to Claiborne Funeral Home. Homemade chili, cake and soft drink all for $5.00 per person. Tickets may be purchased from squad members or you may pay at the door. Come out and support your Rescue Squad. The Claiborne County Volunteer Rescue Squad is a non-paid volunteer emergency rescue service whose mission is to help during emergencies.

    Tennessee Firearms Association Lakeway Chapter

    Meeting will be Tuesday evening, November 18, 2008 at Shoneys Family Restaurant at 1933 West Andrew Johnson Hwy. (11E) Morristown, TN. A pre-meeting social hour is from 6 to 7 p.m., and the meeting will begin promptly at 7 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. Retired BATF agent Charles Mercer will speak about the agency and provide some personal experiences.     Chili Supper & Basketball Tournament

    Little Barren Baptist Church Youth will be having a Chili Supper & Basketball Tournament Saturday November 15 beginning at 3 p.m. at Midway School. Proceeds will benefit the church building fund. Games & meals beginning at 3 p.m. We will also have cake walks and special concessions. Special thanks to MCM & Oak Grove for their participation. Everyone invited to attend for an evening of fellowship and fun.
