TAZEWELL—Alderman Wayne Jessie reported at the November Tazewell Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting that the Claiborne High School National Honor Society would be having a Christmas Lighting ceremony at the Tazewell City Park on December 4 at 6 p.m. He said the CHS band would be performing and there would be caroling.

The Tazewell Planning Commission met on the same night as the Tazewell BMA and both meetings had the same visitor.

During the Planning Commission meeting Jack Ealy, a representative for Murphy Bottling, approached commissioners about placing an off site sign within the Tazewell city limits. After brief discussion, the commission decided they had no control over the matter and directed Ealy to attend the BMA meeting and speak to the board.

The city of Tazewell has a sign ordinance that states signs cannot be placed in the city unless the business they are advertising is on the same piece of property. Commissioners explained to Ealy that the ordinance was put in place because the section of US 25E that runs through Tazewell was designated as a scenic highway.

In other business, the commission reviewed the new digital map of the city of Tazewell to check and see if the boundaries of the city were correct and if street names were correct and still existing.

The Board of Mayor and Alderman met shortly after the Planning Commission. Mayor Steve Vass recognized members of the public and asked if there was anyone present who wanted to approach the board. Jack Ealy approached the board asking about the ordinance pertaining to offsite signs. He said the Planning Commission referred him to the board. After some discussion the board decided they could not allow the off site sign. They did however, recommend talking to the state about directional signs. Ealy thanked the board for their help and said he would get in touch with the state.

In old business the board approved on the second reading an ordinance amending the “Zoning Map of Tazewell” by rezoning territory from R-1, Residential District, to R-2 Medium Density Residential District. They also approved on the second reading, an ordinance zoning the recently annexed property in Ordinance 241 to C-2 General Business District.
