HARROGATE — Friday night, November 21, 2008, the Cumberland Gap Panthers challenged the Coalfield Yellow Jackets. The night started off as the Junior Varsity Lady Panthers took the floor to face the Lady Yellow Jackets. While the young ladies from Coalfield seemed to put up a fight, our home town Panthers, splattered the Jackets with a final score of 53-26. Cumberland Gap’s quick pace and teamwork carried the Panthers through the first half without struggle. The score at the half was 25-10 in favor of the Panthers, and they never looked back. Emily Daniels from the Gap led all scorers with 23 points. Panther Kayla Lewis had 14 points; while, Brooke Fuson and Scarlett Sweet added 6 and 4 respectively. Megahn Treece, Madison Chumley, Courtney Walker rounded out the scoring for Cumberland Gap with 2 a piece.

The next game on the line up for the night was the Varsity Lady Panthers against the Lady Jackets. The Panthers game out fired up and on the first possession the Gap’s Courtney Williams stepped back and drilled a three. From there the Panthers kept firing and kept hitting throughout the quarter. The score at the end of the first was 14-8 in favor of the Panthers. Coalfield found themselves in the second quarter and decided to make a game out of it. The Yellow Jackets Alaine Jordan came up with steal after steal oftentimes leading to easy fast break points for Coalfield. The Panthers fought hard to keep it close but were trailing going in to half time 28-29. The third quarter was slow moving with only 19 points being scored between both teams, leaving the score going into the fourth quarter 36-40 in favor of Coalfield. The fourth quarter proved to be exciting and close with the game coming right down to the final buzzer. Courtney Crowder of Cumberland Gap started the Panthers attempt at comeback, when she scored 4 quick points that got the Panthers within 3 with 7:18 left in the game. Courtney Williams then hit a 3 that knotted the score up at 45 with just fewer than 6 minutes left. Crowder then hit another big shot that gave the Panthers their first lead of the second half. From there it was all Jackets as they went on a quick run that left the Panthers fighting the clock. Coalfield finished on top beating the Panthers 58-54. Mackenzie McFall had 15 points and 8 rebounds, Courtney Williams had 13 points, Chelsea Graves had 11 points and 2 rebounds, and Crowder had 8 point and 8 rebounds for the Panthers. Coalfield was led by Alaine Jordan, who finished with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Whitney Walls also added 13 points and 6 rebounds for the Lady Jackets.

Last up for the night were the Varsity boys. Trying hard for a win, the Panthers took the court fired up and ready to show the Cougars what they were made of. The Gap came out firing and never gave Coalfield a chance taking a 23-8 lead at the end of the first period. The second period consisted of much of the same but instead of the starters scoring the bench started to contribute for the Panthers. John Douglas was one of those bench players who stepped up adding 8 points and 7 rebounds. Cumberland Gap took a 40-17 lead into the half. The second half was an exact copy of the first with Cumberland Gap never surrendering; they closed out the game with an 82-51 win. Cory Cheek from Cumberland Gap once again led all scorers with 23 points, 5 steals, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds. Timmy Ayers also had another successful game collecting 13 rebounds, 8 points, 4 steals and 1 block. Michael Lopez of Coalfield scored 13 pts and had 6 rebounds. Jacob Powers followed behind with 9 pts and 4 rebounds.
