Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Gary R. Wade recently swore in six Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law (LMU-DSOL) students, granting them the privilege to practice law under Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 7 Section 10.03.

The rule allows a law student in good standing, which has completed one-half or more of the legal studies required for graduation from any school of law from which a graduate is eligible to take the Tennessee bar examination to be granted legal approval by the Tennessee Supreme Court to provide legal services in a limited capacity. The students must be under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney in the offices where the students are working. LMU-DSOL regularly files Motions for Approval of Limited Practice Licenses for its students that qualify.

Brian Belden, Amber Corn, Victoria Herman, Leah Brown, Patrick Slaughter and Seth Oakes are the latest LMU-DSOL students to receive the approval to practice under the rule. A total of 29 LMU-DSOL students have such approval and are currently working in governmental and non-profit entities as interns or externs while completing their law degrees. Belden is working with the Anderson County Public Defender’s office. Corn will utilize her limited license for the Sevier County Public Defender’s office while Herman and Slaughter will work for the other side at the Sevier County’s District Attorney’s office. Brown is working for the Bradley County District Attorney’s office and Oakes will work in the Campbell County District Attorney’s office.

LMU-DSOL’s inaugural class is slated to graduate in 2013. LMU-DSOL has Tennessee Board of Law Examiners approval through 2017so all students may apply to sit for the bar exam in the state of Tennessee.
