As a former high school band member and recent graduate, I am appalled that people still fail to see the importance of band as a part of a well rounded education. Marion Anders’ editorial, “No more band in the local high schools?” published in the Claiborne Progress, May 6, 2009 identifies some great reasons for restoring band to our high school curriculum. But, we need to continue the battle to educate the community.
Band participation at Claiborne High increased steadily for several years until an unqualified teacher was appointed band director last year. By the end of band camp, half the band had quit, and those who remained could not compete in state level band clinics because their band director was not certified. The claimed lack of student interest in band participation cited by the school board is invalid.
The fine arts are part of the state educational requirements for high school students. The academic value of music education in schools has been well documented. Eliminating band and chorus, leaves only art class for students to take. This is a sad case for students whose artistic talents lay elsewhere.
I played in both the Claiborne High School Band (during middle school) and the Union County High School Band. The friends I made in band provided a support group of kids who valued education and were willing to work hard as a team. We learned that it takes courage, dependability, discipline and hard work to achieve success – not a bad preparation for the workplace.
Sincerely,
Billy Brame
