On the recommendation of the Fire Department Committee, which is comprised of two council members from each city and the fire chief, Richard Janeway was appointed as the Tazewell New Tazewell Fire Chief by unanimous vote at the New Tazewell City Council. Janeway will begin his tenure February 1st. Barron Kennedy, the outgoing chief resigned in December, but was asked to remain in his position until a new chief was installed. Janeway brings 25 years of local fire department experience to his new position and 20 years as assistant chief. Mayor Beeler along with several other council members voiced their confdence in Janeway’s leadership abilities and capability to bring innovative changes and improvements to the department.
In other business, there was a public hearing on Ordinance #2009-280 amending chapter 3, section 11-310 storm water drainage requirements. No input was garnered from the audience and on second reading the amendment was passed. New business focused on Ordinance #2020-281 which addresses the annexation of the Heritage Christian Academy. Passing on the first reading, this annexation will formalize and increase the police and fire protection with decreased response time to the school.
A grateful citizen commended the street crew on their quick response and hard work keeping the streets accessible and clear of ice and snow during the recent winter storm. Mayor Beeler stated that the street department has a good system in place and are continuing to research options to institute improvements.
Police Chief Johnny Johnson reported during the 2008-2009 calendar year accidents were down by 16%, resulting in a decrease in injuries and property damages by 64 and 13% respectively. Domestic violence saw a decrease by 28%. These overall decreases were attributed to the increased police presence in the community. Revenues for the department, however, saw an increase of 41%. The council and mayor commended Chief Johnson and his officers for their dedication to protecting and keeping the community safe.
Beeler reported the contract for the new airport hangars will be signed soon with a walk-through to review the improvements and updates implemented by Bill Hensley of Precision Air under his management. It was reported a three-month wait on materials could delay some work, however, the foundations for the hangers could proceed.
All council meetings are open to the public and the council encourages the public to attend and voice its input. The council meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 at the New Tazewell City Hall.
