The Lane train has left the station. I had planned to discuss the embarrassing loss the Vols had to Virginia Tech in the “Chicken Bowl,” then I thought about the embarrassment the basketball Vols handed the Vol nation, but I changed my mind again. For a moment picture this, you are relaxing by a beautiful tropical pool in the dead of winter with family and friends and you get a call about the circus that has become Tennessee Athletics. For another moment picture this, you are speaking to a group of doctors, PhD’s and leading business men when you get a call from your wife and she says “Honey you have 67 messages on the answering machine and all these have come in the last hour, Lane Kiffin just quit and is taking the USC job. “I’m in the middle of my motivational speech and my athletic world is turned upside down yet again. (Not really, I’m deeper than Tennessee Athletics)

Of the entire circus miasma that has been placed at the feet of the Vol fans I place the blame on Mike Hamiliton, Director of Athletics at the University of Tennessee. Do you realize that before Coach Fulmer was asked to leave that Hamiliton “redone” his contract and that Coach Fulmer is being paid every month $125,000.00. That’s over $28,000 a week (how much do you make a week?) And guess who is paying for that? Do you also realize that if the assistant coaches on Lane Kiffin’s staff do not get jobs that Tennessee will be paying their salaries too?

If you will look in last week’s paper (which came out on Tuesday night and Lane Kiffin quit later on that night) I was asked, do I think Lane Kiffin was going to get the job done? My reply was, “The bigger challenge may be keeping him around long enough to get it done.” Now I have been accused of knowing he was quitting, I was told, you kept saying in the paper if only Coach Kiffin would stay he would get the job done, you had to know something.

The fact is… I will never tell my sources. Maybe I just guessed correctly.
