The Cumberland Gap Panthers hosted the Claiborne Bulldogs in three games of basketball competition. It was exactly one week since the two schools battled each other on the court at Claiborne High. The first game of this rivalry was between the junior varsity boy's teams. The two teams moved the scoreboard at nearly the same pace throughout the first quarter. The Panthers used offensive rebounding to gain a three point lead at 11-8 with 3:50 remaining. Coach Brooks used a timeout to implore his team to rebound on the offensive end. With 15.6 CHS had the lead but the Panthers responded and by the end of one the score was 13-12 in favor of the Panthers. At the six minute mark in the second the Bulldogs had the lead at 15-13. The Panthers came down the court and tied it at 15. At the 4:17 mark the Bulldogs had pulled out to a four point lead at 22-17. A seven point lead was narrowed to five at the 2:40 mark by the Panther offense. At the end of the first half the Panthers had closed to within three. Mark Estep led the Bulldogs with 13 first half points while Davin Ellison had 6 for the Panthers. The panther struck first in the third and brought the lead to one at 24-25. After a quick Panther run the Bulldogs were down by four forcing coach Brooks to call a timeout to slow the game down. The Panthers pulled out to a seven point lead with 3:30 left in the third and then on out to a 12 point lead. At the 1:28 mark a run by CHS narrowed the lead to seven at 40-33. The Panthers grabbed another offensive rebound and put it in the cylinder as the third quarter buzzer sounded to lead by 10 at 45-35. Inconsistent play by the Bulldogs had coach Brooks at wits end as his team was falling further behind. At 4:26 it was a fifteen point lead for the Panthers. The Bulldogs had the advantage down to 8 at the 2 minute mark and again with 55 seconds left but they just could not sustain a run to get them back even with the Panthers. The final score was 59-48 with the Panthers getting the win. Leading the Panthers in scoring was Jake Taylor with 11. Leading the Bulldogs in scoring was Chase Atkins with 17 points.
