Explosives were detonated safely last Thursday night when the Knox County Special Response Team assisted Claiborne County Emergency Management Homeland Security.

The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a possible burglary at a home on Mountain Road just after 7:30 Thursday night. Upon arrival, the owner of the residence told the first responding officer that he found what he believed to be explosive materials in the home.

The officer then notified Emergency Management Homeland Security and the Knox County Special Response Team.

Upon investigation, it was determined that there were components for a device. After an investigation of the home and nearby out-buildings the KCSRT along with the FBI utilized robots to recover the materials.

A counter charge was then put into place and the materials were destroyed without incident.

As per protocol, the Claiborne County EMS, Lifestar and South Claiborne Fire Department were all placed on standby during the destruction of the materials.

Deputies with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office closed Mountain Road to through traffic for a short period of time due to the close proximity of the scene.

The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms took the lead investigation over Friday morning and the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office continued their initial investigation.
