Special Olympics take over Hillcrest Lanes

The Special Olympics teams from Hancock, Claiborne and Union counties met Oct. 3 at Hillcrest Lanes in Harrogate. The bowlers, both young and old, assembled together for a few hours of bowling fun.

Bob Johnson, who has been active in Special Olympics for many years, was once again in charge of setting up the event and making sure it was special for all that attended. Johnson and his helpers, including students from Angie Runions’ Service Learning Class at Claiborne High School, assisted the bowlers and gave out the many medals. There were a few sponsors that made the event happen, including The Sports Center, United Way and Hillcrest Lanes.

This event has settled in to be an annual one which looks to be in good shape for years to come. Just for a moment, these bowlers smiled and laughed as they sent those colorful bowling balls down the lanes toward the pins. There were a few strikes and spares but more importantly the bowlers enjoyed being in competition with others and themselves. After the bowling action concluded medals were given out, completing the day with even more smiles.

Johnson said he would like to take the opportunity on behalf of all the bowlers to thank the sponsors and everyone who volunteered.
