The historic town of Cumberland Gap held its popular annual event that brings the carvers out during the spookiest night of the year. Contestants sharpened their carving knives in preparation for the Pumpkin Lights Festival, a mainstay for area artists.

As in past years, the entries were quite original in form and excellently executed.

When the dust settled, three lucky winners were chosen to enjoy the fruits of their labors. Robin Green took away the coveted first place prize, winning $75 in cash and a one-hour dance party courtesy of the Pineapple Tea Room. Green’s unique entry utilized two pumpkins to demonstrate her vision of a scary face and detached hand combo.

Second and third place winners were Cumberland Gap High School students Hannah Heath and Emily Simpson. Heath envisioned her pumpkin to portray the face of a demon. Simpson’s carving detailed a scene from the ‘Day of the Dead.’

For her efforts, Heath won $50 in cash and a $25 gift certificate to the Gap Creek Coffee House.

Simpson won for herself $25 in cash and a large specialty pizza from Angelo’s in the Gap.

Town officials would like to thank everyone who participated in the annual event and to invite all to join them next year, when the 2018 edition comes to town.
