It appears that Claiborne commissioner Bill Keck spent a bit of time late last year, dodging bullets in his own home. Keck allegedly entered his residence during the early morning hours of Nov. 27, unaware that a couple of uninvited guests were in the midst of ransacking his home for valuables.

The startled couple allegedly shot at the commissioner before making their getaway in Keck’s 2001 Chevy Silverado. The two then fled down Hwy. 33 south toward the Sharps Chapel community, with Keck in pursuit, according to the initial press release from the Claiborne Sheriff’s Office.

The couple was apprehended the following day by members of the CCSO, and later booked into the Claiborne County Jail under $1 million bond, each.

The Claiborne Grand Jury has indicted one of the alleged culprits. A true bill was returned on Michael Jason Gilbert, 32, on attempted second degree murder, aggravated burglary, theft over $2,500 and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

His alleged accomplice, Kayla Lynn Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty in Claiborne Criminal Court to attempted second-degree murder and aggravated burglary, according to criminal information gathered from the Claiborne County Court Clerk’s Office.

Judge Shayne Sexton sentenced Johnson to a concurrent eight years in prison for her part in the crime.

Gilbert was indicted by the Grand Jury under two additional, apparently unrelated true bills charging him with two counts of resisting arrest and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. These incidents allegedly occurred on Aug. 6 and Nov. 5 of last year.

An indictment does not indicate guilt. It does indicate that the grand jury found enough evidence to warrant turning the case over to trial.
