A three-year-old child has succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound that occurred just past 8 a.m. on Dec. 28. Claiborne Sheriff Bob Brooks confirms the child, Drake Adams, had been airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he died during surgery.

An autopsy will determine the details in this incident that was first reported as a fatality resulting from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The autopsy should also confirm what type of weapon was used. Unconfirmed reports say the fatality was the result of an accidental discharge of a pellet gun.

The father, convicted felon Anthony Adams, was arrested hours later on unrelated charges for possession of a handgun and a shotgun. Other charges include possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a schedule VI controlled substance.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Claiborne Sheriff’s Office in this case.
