There were 128 athletes from Claiborne County, Hancock County and Union County participating during the 2019 track and field events for the Area 17 Special Olympics. May 8 featured clear skies and hot, humid temperatures, but the athletes didn’t seem to mind.

The athletes competed hard and with focus taking home several medals and, more importantly, lots of great memories. Participant ages varied from six to 58 years.

Area Director Bob Johnson wanted to thank the ones that made this event special, “I’d like to give thanks to Cumberland Trails United Way, The Sports Center, Sherry Rowe and her staff at Special Education Department and to all the wonderful volunteers from Claiborne High School in the Service Learning Class.”
